Second grade is a great year for the children AND parents. You are in the routine of homework expectations, and your CHILD no longer even wants a nap!
In second grade have several special events and field trips that are traditional to our year. All classes will take a field trip to Walter B. Jacobs' Nature Park in November as part of our study of plants and animals in science. Our big celebration of the year is the Fourth of July in February. This is part of our social studies unit on patriotism and the history of our country. We will collect items for the military and participate in a program of patriotic songs, all American games, and a hot dog picnic. To encourage summer reading, we will go to the Summer Reading Festival in May. Our end of school party is a Fifties themed event, complete with poodle skirts, leather jackets, a sock hop, and sundaes!
We also learn a lot in second grade! Each week we have a story, vocabulary, and skills in reading. We cover everything from addition and subtraction to geometry and problem solving in math. Creative writing is a big part of our curriculum. We write everything from narratives to poetry. Our spelling and grammar studies help us to become more proficient writers. We have social studies and science units on a rotating basis. This year's study time will require more reviewing of information.
In second grade our AR goal is calculated in points instead of number of books. Most of our books count .5 or 1 point. Read, read, read!!!
Don't forget to take lots of pictures, and set aside an envelope for groups of 3-4 - Fifth Grade Finale will be here before you know it!
If you would like to volunteer to help with any of these or other activities, please let us know. It will be fun - you will see!
